This design was produced as a prototype for development and land management that was to be applied in areas where town and countryside are only tenuously separated. It represents informed densification through the clustering of several individual housing units in a single courtyard infrastructure that also contains communal and production spaces such as allotments, vegetable gardens and greenhouses. The courtyards have prefabricated, reinforced-concrete frames that provide the supporting infrastructure for housing units of various sizes, which are brought together to create mixedfunction nuclei. The project was designed to find a place in the broad tradition extending from Yona Friedman to James Wines that has explored alternative destinies for the metropolis – once-utopian visions that are now seen as the seeds of innovative forms of realism.
