This project represents a surreal vision of how the city and its spaces could be transformed. Pier 1 in Dunkerque has been designed as a recreational place, a space for fun – a public space that is an extension of the city centre. In this sense, the Pier becomes a “fun machine” for the local residents, a project that displays a voluntary unconsciousness of public space, one in which to live spectacular moments day after day. The strategy is developed in two programmatic bands: a large promenade of public facilities, and a park with artificial hills between which both the restored and the new buildings are nestled. At the heart of the project there is the new centre for contemporary arts. The idea is to integrate this new structure with the existing buildings that have been maintained while adapting the latter to new functions.
