FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE DELFT, THE NETHERLANDS – 2009
DESIGN TEAM:
2A+P/A (Gianfranco Bombaci, Matteo Costanzo)
While architecture is hardly ever temporary, it is usually an irreversible transformation of the environment in which we live. Each unpredictable event gives us an occasion to experiment with the replacement of an urban form. For this project we were called upon to reconstruct a building that had unfortunately been lost: the Faculty of Architecture in Delft, which was gutted by fire in 2008. This project represented an occasion for evaluating strategies for the reuse of the land. Today, the act of building has to be considered a great occasion. Every square metre of free land is a precious resource that has to be preserved. The built area of our cities is completely saturated. This project was an attempt to imagine architecture as something extraordinary, a precious and rare occasion to build in the city.
